The county courtroom was larger than the family court, and it was fuller.

They had opened the balcony. People had brought folding chairs.

Brennan sat at the defense table in a county-issue orange jumpsuit, because his bail had ended at the pediatrician's, and he had not slept.

His mother sat in the second row on my side of the aisle.

She did not look at him, and he looked back at her twice.

Alastair sat behind me with Hazel, and I had the baby on my knee, in a small white cap.

She was three months old, and she had learned to laugh at the sound of a gavel.

The judge was a gray man with a quiet voice, and he took off his glasses and set them on the bench.

"We are here for sentencing on two counts," he said. "Bigamy and forgery. And the state has added a third."

The prosecutor stood.

She read an entry from a green notary journal, dated the twenty-second of March.

Quitclaim deed, 14 Alder Lane. Not notarized. Wouldn't sign. R. angry.

"The defendant attempted to transfer a house he did not own," she said. "When that failed, he took forty-one thousand dollars from a joint account on the day his wife was in labor."

"Mrs. Montgomery," he said. "Would you like to address the court?"

I gave the baby to Hazel and stood.

I had written nothing down.

I looked at Brennan, and he looked at me, and for a moment I saw all three years in his face.
