Chapter 23: The Same Altar
Emmeline's POV
On Easter Sunday, I stood in front of my bedroom mirror and told Alastair his tie was wrong.
"It's the one you picked," he said.
"It's the one I picked for a different shirt."
I pulled the knot loose and did it again, and he stood very still with his chin lifted and his eyes on the ceiling.
His hands settled on my hips.
They didn't move. They just stayed, warm through the thin green dress, and I felt it all the way down.
"Hazel will time us," I said.
"Hazel's already in the car."
"Then we're late."
He kissed me once, slowly, and I smoothed the tie flat and told myself to stop smiling.
My daughter was nine months old, and she had decided that day to pull herself up on the furniture.
She stood in her crib in a long white gown that had been Hazel's mother's, holding the rail with both fists, and she screamed with joy when we came in.
St. Anselm's was full.
I had expected a handful of family.
Instead, the whole town had come, in spring coats, with children in clean shoes, and half the people on my lawn last summer were in the pews.
The same white roses ran along every pew. I had asked for them.
The church smelled of wax and lilies. Sun came through the high windows and lay across the aisle in long yellow bars.
I stopped in the doorway with my daughter on my hip.
Hazel, in her good cardigan, put her hand under my elbow.
"You can turn around," she said.
