Chapter 4: Soup

Bridget came on the third morning, at nine, carrying a jar of chicken soup in both hands.

She stood on my porch in the same cream cardigan she had worn to my baby shower.

Her eyes were swollen, and a thin gold band sat on her left hand.

I opened the door with my daughter on my shoulder and did not step back.

"Emmeline," Bridget said, and began to cry. "I made your soup. The one with the lemon. I didn't know what else to bring."

For six years, whenever I was sick or sad, Bridget had come to my door with that soup.

That was why the first thing I felt was relief.

Then I remembered the church, and the feeling went cold.

"Say what you came to say," I told her.

"He lied to me." She pressed the jar against her chest. "He said you two were over. He said it was done in March, that you'd both agreed to keep it quiet until the baby came, because you were scared."

"Of what?"

"Of everything. Of being alone."

I said nothing.

"I didn't know," she whispered. "I swear to you I didn't know."

From a tote bag on her shoulder she pulled out a manila folder and held it toward me.

"He gave me this the night he proposed. Look at it. Please look."

I took it with one hand.

It was a divorce decree, stamped and signed, dated the fourteenth of March.

My name was printed on the line for the petitioner. Above it, in blue ink, was a signature that read: Emmeline Kincaid.

I looked at it for a long time.
