I did not go home.

I went to the taverna at six and made the dough for the Saturday bread, and I let my mother-in-law's voice stay where it was, on a phone in a drawer.

Nikos was gone by then.

He had left the way he came, over the iron rail, and the window was shut.

Aris had put two bowls out on the prep table without comment.

I ate half of mine and did not tell him the smell of the lentils made me want to be sick.

At noon he looked at me over the flour and said, "Is it always going to be this bad?"

"In the mornings," I said.

"For another month."

"Mama said it was bad with me too," Aris said.

"Mama said you were worse," I said.

"She did not."

"She said you kicked from the first week."

He grinned.

Then he stopped grinning and went to the walk-in and stood in the cold for a minute with the door open.

I knew where he was standing.

At four Nikos was in the alley behind Aris's building.

I had not told him where to be.

He was standing against the brick by the dumpster with his hands in his coat pockets, in the old gray light of the afternoon, and when he saw me he took his hands out.
