Chapter 12: The Night Charge

The officer was young, and he looked embarrassed to be standing in my front hall at three in the morning.

"Ma'am, Ms. Baird says you assaulted her three years ago, at a hotel. She says you've been threatening her since." He checked his notebook. "She's brought a signed statement. It's yours."

"I know," I said.

"You're not under arrest. I just need you to come in and answer questions."

Desmond stepped between us.

"My wife was in bed with me all night," he said. "She has been home with me since Sunday. Whatever this is, it goes through our lawyer."

"Desmond," Selene said softly. "Please."

"Selene, go home."

She flinched.

I watched her put her hand to her chest, and the cradle charm slid down her wrist and caught the porch light.

"I didn't want this," she said. "Hester said it was the only way to make her stop. I just want it to be over."

"Hester said," I repeated.

Selene's mouth shut.

The officer looked from her to me.

"Tomorrow at ten, ma'am," he said at last. "Bring someone."

They went down the steps.

Selene looked back once, and she was not crying anymore.

Desmond shut the door and leaned on it.

"She was crying when she got here," I said. "She's not now."

"I saw."

"Your phone buzzed. Earlier."

He closed his eyes.

"I know. I didn't answer."

"I know you didn't." I took his hand off the doorknob and held it. "That was the first term you kept."

He let out a laugh that sounded close to a sob.

At seven, Marit called.

"She phoned me back," she said. "She'll meet you at a diner on Sheridan, in Evanston, at nine. She said to bring your husband. She said he should hear it."
