Chapter 18: Torn Three Times

The Cedar Row board met on Monday at ten, in a room with a long table and a plate of cut fruit nobody touched.

I stood at the head of it in my navy dress.

Desmond stood at the back by the door, with his hands in his pockets, exactly where I had asked him to be.

There were seven trustees.

Three of them had been at the Hotel Ambrose on Saturday, and I could tell which.

They would not meet my eyes.

Hester's chair at the foot of the table was empty.

The director cleared her throat.

"Mrs. Carrow, the board wishes to begin with an apology," she said.

"I didn't ask for one."

"Nevertheless." She folded her hands. "Three weeks ago the finance committee asked me to open a review of your mother's account. I was told it was routine. I should have told you what the letter was really for."

"What was it for?"

"To frighten you." She said it plainly. "I've read the circumstances now. I'm sorry."

A man at the table, the oldest, spoke up gruffly.

"We've also voted, as of this morning, to remove Mrs. Hester Carrow from the finance committee and from the board."

"Unanimously," said a woman beside him.

I had expected to feel like a winner.

I felt tired, and a little shy.

"Thank you," I said.

"There's one more thing."

The director slid a sheet of cream letterhead across the table.
