Chapter 20: Come In

Phillip's POV

My wife looked at me across a bathroom full of her lovers and did not say no.

She did not say yes, either.

She said, "Gentlemen, we're adjourned."

They filed out.

Jax went last, and he stopped beside me at the door and said, very quietly, "Don't be clever, Phil. Be early."

Then the door closed, and it was only us and a tub of cooling water.

"Say it," Beatrice said. "Whatever you came to say. You've been standing in my doorways for three years."

I had a speech.

It was in four parts, with a title.

It left me the moment she looked at me.

"I love you," I said.

It came out hoarse and much too loud for the room.

"I have loved you since the engagement dinner."

"I loved you when you said the thing about the sex."

"I loved you on the wedding night, while I was telling you I belonged to someone else."

She said nothing.

"I wanted you to want me without my having to ask," I said. "That was the plan."

"It was a bad plan. I have never made a worse one, and I once corrected a will in pen."

Her mouth moved at the corner, and she shut it.

"So I'm asking," I said. "Put me in the calendar. Any slot. Thursday, Sunday, the hour after lunch. I'll be there with a pen."

"Phillip."

"I know your system. I know I'm the one who is gray. Give me a color."

"No," she said.

I felt it land.

For three years I had believed that my wife could not love a man, only fit him in.

I had built my whole marriage on that belief.

My wife stood in front of me in a bathrobe, refusing me a slot, and the belief was wrong.

"I'm not giving you a slot," Beatrice said.

"I understand."

"I don't think you do." She came across the marble until she was close enough to touch. "I'm not putting you on the calendar. If you want in, you come in."
