Chapter 13: The Thumb Ring

Claire's face went through three things in a second.

Surprise, then fear, then a smile she put on carefully.

"Daniel," she said. "Thank God. Tell her."

"Tell her what?"

"That the photo is real. That you begged me to keep quiet."

"I never begged you for anything." He held out his hand to me. "Laura, may I see it?"

I gave him the printout and kept hold of one corner.

He studied it the way he studied a kid's sheet music, close, with his mouth pressed flat.

"That's my ring," he said.

Claire folded her arms over the green cardigan. "Of course it's your ring."

"It's my ring, and it isn't my hand." He turned the page toward the window. "My knuckles are bigger. And I don't own a shirt with the cuff rolled twice like that."

"You can't tell all that from a picture."

"The week before Bea was born, you took my ring to your jeweler." He didn't look up. "You said it should be clean for the hospital photos. It came back in two days."

Claire laughed, a short, high sound.

"That was a kindness."

"It was," Daniel said. "I thought so then."

He put one finger on the woman's hand in the photo.

"And this I know. A silver ring on the thumb, with a flat blue stone. Only one person at my school wears that."

"Whose is it?" I asked.

"Come and see."

Claire stepped between us and the door.

"Laur, if you walk out with him, I can't help you anymore."
