Chapter 20: The Guarantor
Dr. Ames took us at eight on Monday, both of us, with the door closed.
He read the little gray phone's screen in silence, holding it far from his face.
He read the message sent at 5:51 on Sunday evening twice.
Then he took off his glasses and rubbed the bridge of his nose.
"I received that," he said. "I did not answer it."
"Why not?" Daniel asked.
"Because it bothered me." He folded the glasses. "Your wife's sister has sent me eleven messages of that kind over three years. Always from a number I didn't recognize. Always about Laura's mood, her sleep, what she had said."
"And you let her," I said.
"I answered the first few." He met my eyes. "She was a family member, she was frightened, and she was paying. I will say that last part plainly, because I've been thinking about it all weekend."
"Paying how?"
He opened a drawer and took out a single sheet of paper with a hospital letterhead.
It was a billing form.
At the bottom, in the line for GUARANTOR, was a signature I would know anywhere.
Claire Hayes.
Under it, in my husband's neat blocks: spouse, no objection.
"Your claim was denied on the third day," Dr. Ames said. "Your sister stepped in that afternoon and put a card down. She was in the building every day after that."
"What does that mean?" I said.
"It means that when I raised a concern, the administration listened to the person who held the account."
He slid a second page across the desk.
It was a memo on his own letterhead, dated day five of my stay, one paragraph long.
