Chapter 9: The Table

"Heath told me the plan on Sunday night," Amber said.

She spoke to the scone bag, with her fingers folded around its top.

"I thought it was kind of him. Now I don't."

"Tell me."

"Everyone was supposed to come to your house on Saturday and eat. After dessert, Cory would stand up and say you two had decided to separate, and he'd put the papers on the table."

"In front of everyone."

"That's why. Heath said you'd sign if the whole table was watching." She finally looked at me. "He said you always do what the table expects."

I sat there with the mug in my hands.

I had cooked for that table for six years.

I had gone upstairs for a guest's sweater and another guest's phone charger and never once sat down to a hot plate.

I had never counted the number of times I stood in my own kitchen while they laughed in the next room.

Heath had counted.

He had counted well enough to build a plan on it.

"He's rescheduling it," Amber said. "This Saturday. He called an hour ago. He said to tell you I was sorry, and that I'd give you the paper myself if Cory lost his nerve."

"You were going to hand it to me?"

"He said it would hurt less coming from me." She shook her head. "That's not kind, is it? That's the opposite."

"It's not kind."

She pressed her hand against her mouth.

I let her cry for a minute without touching her.

I thought of the version of me who would have patted her shoulder and made her tea, and I felt that woman standing a long way off.
