Chapter 13: Fitness for Duty

At eleven, I walked into the boardroom on forty-four, the same room where I had gone down on the carpet.

The long table was full. Nine directors sat along it with water glasses and folders.

Staff stood against the glass wall, fifty or sixty of them, and every phone was in someone's hand.

Lacey sat in the front row with a printed stack on her knees. She had worn her best camel cardigan.

Quincy sat at the foot of the table in his charcoal suit, with thin gloves on both hands.

He didn't look at me. He had promised he wouldn't.

The board chair was a gray-haired woman who had been in this building longer than Quincy.

"Ms. Ashcroft," she said. "Sit. We're here to review your fitness for duty, and the conduct of our chief executive."

"Thank you," I said, and stayed standing.

"Ms. Hollingworth brought us the petition. Ms. Hollingworth, go ahead."

Lacey rose with tears in her eyes and her voice shaking, which she did beautifully.

"We love Pamela," she said. "I've been her friend for four years. But she isn't herself, and she's been going up to the forty-seventh floor alone."

A murmur went through the glass wall.

"There's a photo," Lacey said. "She left his building at dawn in his coat. We think she's being taken advantage of, and we signed because we're worried."

She sat. Somebody near the window sniffled.

"Ms. Ashcroft," the chair said. "Do you wish to respond?"

"I do," I said. "I'd like the screen."

Quincy pressed a key on the table, and the wall behind the chair lit up.
