Chapter 24: The Glove Drawer
We never reached the penthouse.
The elevator opened on forty-six, because he had pressed the button for the clinic, and I had not argued.
The hall was dark. The nurse had gone to the wedding, and the exam room waited at the end of it with its paper-covered table and its single white light.
Quincy turned the lock behind us.
"This is where it started," he said.
"This is where you told me to take off my jacket."
"I'm told you refused."
"I didn't refuse. I took it off slowly, so you'd notice."
"I noticed." His voice dropped. "I noticed for a month."
He took the stethoscope off its hook by the door and hung it around his own neck.
"Sit," he said. "Mrs. Delamere."
I hopped up onto the table in my ivory dress, and the paper crackled under me.
"What are the symptoms?" he said.
"I can't stop looking at my doctor."
"Hippocrates would have me struck off."
"Twice," I said. "At least."
He laughed, low, and the sound went straight down my spine.
He put the cold disc of the stethoscope against my collarbone, and slid it lower, through the lace, over the top of my breast.
"Your heart is fast," he said.
"It does that around you."
"Good. I like that it does."
He dropped the stethoscope and put both bare hands on my knees.
He parted them, and stood between them, and kissed me.
It was slow. It was a long, deep kiss with his thumbs stroking the insides of my thighs.
I reached behind me and found the zipper of the dress, and he found it first.
It slid down my back, and he drew the ivory silk off my shoulders until it pooled around my waist.
