Chapter 5: Her Schedule

On Friday at eight, I carried a canvas tote into the elevator and rode to forty-seven.

In it were my vitamins and the gray tin from the kitchen.

I had added the thermos Lacey had left on my desk the day before.

Quincy's assistant took the bag at the glass door. She didn't ask a single question.

"He said you'd bring everything," she said. "He's in surgery review until noon. Go back to your desk and act normal."

Acting normal took four hours.

Lacey leaned over my cubicle wall at eleven with a fresh thermos.

"Here, babe. Drink up, it's the good batch."

"Thanks." I set it down by my keyboard and didn't touch it.

My phone buzzed. It was Colin.

I'm downstairs. Come meet me for lunch. We need to talk.

Colin had never come to my office in his life.

I rode the elevator to the lobby with my heart going hard.

He stood at the reception desk in his good gray coat.

The security guard was on one side of him and two women from accounting on the other.

"There she is," he said, loud enough for the whole floor. "Pamela, sweetheart. Come here."

"Colin, what are you doing?"

"Taking you home." He turned to the guard. "My wife has been unwell."

He sighed. "She's been confused, telling people she's seeing specialists, going up to floors she has no business on."

"I'm sorry for any trouble she's caused," he added.

The accounting women looked at their shoes.

My face went hot.

"I haven't been confused," I said. "I've been..."
