Chapter 10: The Green Dress
"Bring nothing of hers," Nate read aloud, and his jaw tightened. "He knows I'm here."
"He knows where you sleep, which is a different thing."
"Roxy."
"You're going to go to him at five," I said, "and you're not going to bring me, and you're going to be the loudest man in that room."
"And you'll be there."
"I'll walk in on my own."
He sat up in the gray light.
The ring on his hand caught the streetlamp, and I thought how strange it was that a thing so small could make a whole room look different.
He kissed me once, hard, on the mouth.
"Don't be late."
"Don't be a coward."
"Never again," he said, and I believed him, which was a dangerous feeling.
He took the stairs two at a time and went out through the laundromat, and I heard the woman at the folding table say, "Good luck, honey," before the back door closed.
At two o'clock I stood in the middle of Room 214 in my slip, and three people stared at me.
"That is not a dress," Maisie said.
"It's a slip. I'm getting dressed."
"It's a slip with ambition. We have a lot of work to do."
Bridie came out of the closet with a garment bag over her arm.
"My cousin's wearing this one," she said. "Don't argue. I got it for my sister's wedding. It's the only expensive thing I've ever owned."
She unzipped the bag.
The dress inside was deep green, with a high neck, a low back and a skirt that moved.
I touched the fabric and my eyes stung.
"Bridie, you can't."
