Chapter 13: Read It Out Loud

I turned around with the petition in my bandaged hands.

Mitchell stood in the doorway in a gray suit with a coffee in one fist and his signing pen in the other.

The committee had cancelled its morning session, and he had driven straight back.

He looked glad to see me.

That was the worst part.

"Your mother's here too," he said, noticing Constance. "Is this a family intervention? I'm not sure I've earned one."

"Read this," I said.

I laid the petition on the desk and turned it to face him.

He glanced at it, and his smile stayed where it was.

"Mari, I told you. Odette had that drawn up as a shock. We're withdrawing it Monday."

"Read the first line out loud."

"Why?"

"Because you've never read a word I've put in front of you, and I want to hear you do it."

Constance folded her arms and said nothing, which for her was a gift.

Mitchell set down the coffee and picked up the page.

His lips moved on the heading.

"In the Superior Court of California," he read. "In re the marriage of Mitchell Bradbury and Marisa Bradbury. Petition for dissolution." He stopped. "Irreconcilable differences."

"Now the date by your name."

He found it with his thumb.

"The third."

"Five days before the fire," I said. "You signed it between a hay bill for Odette's ranch and an insurance rider. Look at the back."

He turned the page over and ran his thumb across the dents.

"I don't remember this one," he said.

"You don't remember any of them," Constance said. "That's the whole trouble, Mitchell."

His face did something I had not seen it do in three years.
