Chapter 22: Every Word

Mitchell gave the urn to Constance and walked to the microphone with his father's pen in his hand.

He stood next to me and not in front of me.

"I'm Mitchell Bradbury," he said. "I run Bradbury Air Rescue. I'm going to read some things aloud, and I'd like you to listen to me read them."

Odette stepped forward. "Mitchell, this isn't the place."

"It's the place Marisa picked."

Constance nodded to a man by the speaker stand.

The big screen behind the quartet, which Odette had hung for a slideshow of Rosa's photographs, went white.

A page came up on it, enlarged.

*Petition for dissolution.*

"This is a petition to end my marriage," Mitchell said. "I signed it on the third. Five days before the Cedar Flats fire."

A sound went across the lawn.

"I did not know it was a petition. It was in a stack with a hay invoice and an insurance rider. I signed it the way I sign everything my director of operations puts in front of me."

He read the first line out loud.

Then he read the second.

He read the whole page, one slow sentence after another, with a finger under each line.

It took three minutes, and nobody coughed.

"That's what I signed," he said. "Here's what I didn't."

The next page filled the screen: a printed redirect slip, black text on top of a hard blue signature.

"This slip sent a rescue helicopter away from my wife's grandmother on the night she died. My signature is on it. Look at the ink."

He had Constance hold up the back of the slip to the camera.

You could see the ghost marks of other pages pressed through.

"It was signed blank, in a stack, a week before. I was in a hotel in Seattle asleep."

"Mr. Bradbury is unwell," Odette said sharply into the microphone. "Doctor?"

The doctor in the gray blazer did not stand.

She had folded her hands over her bag and was staring at the screen.
