Chapter 19: The Hall
Ji-han wore the ribbon.
He wore it because Hyeong had sent the gift to tell him that he knew.
The only way to spoil a man's trap was to walk into it wearing the bait.
The swordsman had carried Ji-han's black coat in under the false bottom of a dumpling basket.
The eight-petal collar was still stitched in red.
Ji-han put the coat on in the Cedar Court while Tae-san fastened the frogs one by one.
Tae-san did it.
Ji-han took off the bracer.
The lotus lay bare on his wrist, black on white, eight petals, and he did not cover it.
"You look like a nightmare," Tae-san said.
"Good."
"I mean it as a compliment."
"I know how you mean things. That's the problem with you."
Tae-san tied his own veil on last.
Then he went out ahead of Ji-han, because they had agreed it, and the door closed.
The Council Hall at moonrise was packed to the rafters.
Four hundred Alliance guests sat in rows along the walls.
The nine high seats stood on their dais with the sect heads in their robes.
Three old men in white sat in front, the elders of the Rite.
One of them was small and brown and shrunken as a walnut, with eyebrows like frost.
