Chapter 18: The Second Night

Eli's apartment was on the fourth floor of a brownstone in Brooklyn, and it smelled of coffee and paper.

He did not turn on the overhead light.

A single lamp burned over the kitchen counter, and in its glow I saw a drawer left half open.

It was full of phone chargers, every kind, coiled neatly in rows.

"For guests," he said, following my eyes.

"Of course it is."

"Hannah."

I turned around.

He stood in his doorway with his jacket still on and his glasses crooked.

He looked at me as though he did not believe he was allowed to cross the room.

"Is this in the trustee's duties?" I said.

He laughed, low and rough.

"Terms are broken. You said so yourself."

"Then come here."

He crossed the kitchen in three steps.

His mouth came down on mine, and I was already pulling at his tie.

He slid the jacket off.

I got the knot loose, dragged the tie out of his collar and dropped it on the floor.

His hands went to my waist and lifted me, and set me on the edge of the counter.

The marble was cold through my skirt.

"Look at me," he said.

I looked.

He unbuttoned my blouse one button at a time, and with each button he kissed the skin it uncovered.

My throat.

The slope between my breasts.

He pushed the blouse off my shoulders and unhooked my bra.

Then his mouth was on my nipple, hot and wet.

I tangled my fingers in his hair.

"More," I said.

He sucked harder, and his hand slid under my skirt and up my thigh and pulled my underwear aside.

Two fingers pushed into my pussy.

I was so wet that they went in with no effort at all.

"Christ," he said against my skin. "You've been like this all day."

"Since the deposition."

"Since the auction. I watched you take that room apart and I couldn't think."
