Chapter 14: The Plate

On Wednesday night at ten, someone knocked on my door with an elbow.

Thad and his husband were out at a recital, and the church was dark.

I opened the door and found Max on the landing with a plate in both hands, covered in foil.

"I made you something," he said.

"You cooked," I said.

"I burned the first two," he said. "Thad's husband talked me through the third on the phone."

"What is it?"

"Take the foil off."

I did.

It was a grilled cheese sandwich, cut on the diagonal, with slices of pear melted into the cheddar.

I stood there with the foil in my hand.

"On our second date," he said, "you told me your mother made them on Sundays, and nobody else in the world put pear in one. I made you one the next week and you didn't say anything. You just ate all of it."

"You remembered that."

"I remembered it for six years and never made it again. That's the part I'm sorry for."

I looked at him for a long moment.

Then I took the plate and sat on the bed.

I ate the entire sandwich in the lamplight while he stood by the door with his hands in his pockets.
