The music room had no door, because Max had taken it off its hinges.
A bedsheet hung across the frame, and I pushed it aside at four o'clock on Tuesday and walked in.
Max was in the garden, at my request, with a pair of pruning shears and nothing to prune.
I had never once been inside it.
The Steinway stood open in the bay window.
The dust sheets lay folded on a chair, and in the corner was a small black machine, humming, that kept the air at forty-five percent.
Sybil stood at the window with her back to me.
She was not in her chair.
She stood with her hands clasped behind her, very straight, in her gray cashmere and her pearls.
"Close the sheet, dear," she said, without turning. "It's drafty."
I let the sheet fall.
She turned around.
Her face was different, hard and bright and amused.
It was the face she must have worn at twenty-two on a concert stage.
