The Marwick Concert Hall seats eleven hundred, and on the night of the benefit three hundred of them were in formal black.
I stood in the wings in my own concert dress with my mother's cello in my arms and my heart in my throat.
Eleven children stood behind me in white shirts, tuning in whispers.
The girl with the missing front teeth had grown one tooth in, and she showed it to me twice.
"Miss Aubrey," she said. "Are you scared?"
"Yes."
"Me too. Mr. Thad says that means it matters."
"Mr. Thad is right," I said.
Thad himself stood by the curtain in a purple bow tie, gripping his baton, with his face gone gray.
"I'm going to throw up on the stage," he said.
"You are not."
"I'm going to throw up and the Gresham Foundation will say I did it on purpose."
"They'd say that anyway," I said. "Breathe."
From the wings I could see the front row.
Sybil sat on the aisle in her chair with her silver hair set and her pearls on.
