Chapter 18: Before the Gala
On Friday night the whole marina was dark except for the office window at the end of the dock.
I brought him a sandwich and a thermos of soup, because he had skipped dinner again.
The office was one room with a scarred oak desk, a paper calendar of tide tables, and a plaid couch the dog had claimed years ago.
Terrence sat at the desk under a green lamp with a ledger open in front of him.
His reading glasses had slid down his nose.
I had not known he owned reading glasses.
"You wear glasses," I said.
"Only for numbers."
"They're ridiculous."
"Take them off me, then," said Terrence, and lifted his chin.
I walked around the desk and took them off.
I folded them and set them on the ledger.
Then I sat on the edge of the oak in my school cardigan and my jeans, and put my boot on the arm of his chair.
"What are you adding up?" I asked.
"What's left of the check."
"Three hundred and eighteen thousand dollars."
"Tomorrow I put it on Dad's table."
"Tomorrow," I agreed.
"Tonight you're done with numbers."
I slid down into his lap.
