Chapter 23: Tuesday
My mother sat in the front seat of Terrence's truck with a blanket over her knees and her cookie tin in her lap.
It was the first Tuesday of May.
She had not been outside the gates of Brightwater in five years, and she looked at every mailbox.
"The doctor says my numbers are the best in a year," she said.
"Best in a year, Danny. He used the word 'remarkable.'"
"Then you can have your lake," I said.
"I'm going to eat a hot dog on a dock," said my mother.
"With mustard. Don't argue with me."
Terrence drove at twenty-five miles an hour the whole way.
The dog met us at the gravel lot and walked up to my mother's wheelchair.
She put her hand on his gray head.
"This is the one who bit the man from the county," she said.
"Who told you that?" said Terrence.
"Everyone at Brightwater knows about the dog."
We ate on the deck, with the lake blue and flat and sunny in front of us.
