Chapter 15: Not for Sale

Emme's POV

On Tuesday morning I stood at the school fence with Eli in a carrier on my chest and watched the mothers stop talking.

They had been laughing at something by the gate.

They stopped all at once, and one of them found a great deal to do with her car keys.

I had taught half their children to hold a pencil.

"Good morning," I said.

"Morning, Emme." That was the mother of a boy in my class, who had hugged me at the Christmas program.

She said it to the top of my head.

I had a choice, and I had made up my mind in the car.

I walked up to the middle of the group and put my hand on the carrier.

"I know what you've heard," I said. "I'd rather you hear it from me."

Nobody moved.

"This is Floyd's son. The paper that said he wasn't was forged by Doc Barksdale. He admitted it on Sunday, standing up at Harlan Stallworth's table, in front of eight people."

"Doc?" someone whispered.

"He rented a mailbox in Waco and printed it on his office printer. Ask him."

"But why would he?" the boy's mother said.

"Ask him that too."

I did not say anything else. It was not my secret to tell.

One of the mothers, a nurse, shook her head.

"My sister has been telling people for two days that you and Doc," she said, and stopped. "I'm going to call her."

"Thank you."

"I never believed it," the woman next to her said quickly, and the nurse gave her a look.

I left Eli with the aide in the staff daycare room, and the bell rang, and I walked my kindergarteners in.

It was a long morning. The children did not know anything, and they sat in their circle and showed me a lost tooth and a dead beetle.
