Chapter 5: Report Number One
The lab in Austin sat on the second floor of a brick building behind a dentist's office.
My aunt drove, because I couldn't stop checking the rearview mirror. She parked on the street and said, "I'll wait with the car seat. You do the swabs."
A tech in blue scrubs walked me through it.
She rubbed the cotton swab along the inside of my cheek for ten slow seconds, and then she did the same to Eli.
He fussed and then looked offended, and she laughed.
"The father's sample?" she asked.
I took the zip bag out of my purse and set it on the counter.
She turned it over and looked at the toothbrush, and then at me.
"Did he know you were taking this?"
"No," I said. "He'll find out when he reads the result."
She wrote that down without any expression at all, which I appreciated.
"Chain of custody starts here," she said. "I'll seal this in front of you. You initial the tape and so do I, and nobody opens it until the instrument does. Friday morning, eight o'clock at the latest."
"Thank you."
"One more thing. You said on the form there's already a report on this child from another lab. Do you have it with you?"
I had it. I hadn't let the purse leave my shoulder since Monday.
I handed it across, and she read it standing up.
Her eyebrows came together.
"Brazos Genetic Partners," she said.
"Do you know them?"
"No." She turned to her monitor and typed. "And I know most of them. I've been doing this for eleven years."
