Chapter 13: Live on Air

By eight o'clock Stanton had posted a statement.

It had a photo of him and Amber in front of the Wolves banner, and a paragraph under it.

My wife and I have been separated since the summer, Stanton had written. I am heartbroken that she chose to hurt a good man while she was unwell.

Lena read it standing at Beck's window.

"Separated," she said. "Since the summer."

"He wrote it in ten minutes," Beck said from the couch. "Amber fixed the commas."

"He's calling me a cheat."

"He's calling you a sick cheat. It's a package."

His phone rang on the table.

He looked at the screen, and his mouth went flat.

"My agent."

He answered on speaker.

"Beck, I'm sorry," a man said, fast. "Northpoint Sportswear pulled out. The truck dealership too. Both want to know if the Telford thing is a morals clause."

"It's my private life," Beck said.

"It's the owner's daughter's fiance and a married woman, on every sports site. The sponsors say it's not private."

"What else?"

"Donald called the league. You're benched until further notice. He says it's conduct."

Beck closed his eyes.

"Say it again," Lena said.

The agent went quiet.

"Who's that?"

"Lena Sadler."

"Ma'am, I'm very sorry for your situation."

"No, you're not," Lena said. "You just lost a client's money and you want me to feel bad about it. Is he fired, or benched?"

"Benched. Paid, for now. Donald can end it with one email."

He hung up.

Beck set the phone down.

"You didn't have to say that to him," he said.

"Yes, I did."

She sat down beside him.

"Stanton is spending Amber's father's money. Your team dropped you in one morning. I'm the only one in this room with nothing left to lose, and I'm done being talked about."
