Chapter 4: Play It Again

At ten o'clock on Monday morning, Lena walked into Dunning Arena through the staff door.

The guard on duty was an old man who had bought hot chocolate at Harbor Ice every winter for twenty years.

He took one look at her face and held the door open.

"Go on, Lena Sadler," he said. "I didn't see you."

The press room smelled like coffee and hair gel.

Sixty reporters sat in folding chairs facing a stage with a wolf banner behind it.

On the stage, Stanton stood at the podium in a brand-new Wolves jersey, grinning with all his teeth.

Amber stood on his left in a navy dress, holding the leather folder.

On his right stood a silver-haired man with a gold watch, and Lena knew his face from the arena walls.

Donald Dunning, the owner.

The whole team stood in a row behind them, in suits.

Beck Rylander stood at the far end, with his arms folded.

Lena stopped in the back with her phone in her hand.

"The Wolves are proud to welcome Stanton Telford," Donald said into the microphone. "A man of discipline, who built himself from nothing."

"Thank you, sir," Stanton said. "I want to thank my wife, who couldn't be here today."

Lena walked down the center aisle.

Heads turned.

A photographer lowered his camera, then lifted it again.

"I'm right here," Lena said.

Stanton's smile froze.

Amber stepped to the edge of the stage and said, very softly, "Security."

"Mrs. Telford is unwell," Donald said into the mic, with perfect calm. "Someone please help her to a quiet room."
