Chapter 11: Ardsley

"The Ardsley is a 1926 apartment block on Whitaker Street," Patrick said, on the porch, with the key in his fist. "I restored it in 2019."

"Restored it how?"

"Every window, every stair, every lock. I kept a site office in 3C, third floor, back, for two years. Ivy did my books up there."

I looked at the brass tag, 3C, in his palm.

"Who has it now?"

"The management company leased it out after I closed the job. I haven't been in the building since." He frowned. "The manager mentioned a tenant once. A woman who keeps books for restaurants. She pays in cash and she's never late."

"When?"

"A while ago."

I stepped closer. "Patrick. When?"

"Three years ago in September," he said slowly. "The month before."

We looked at each other in the porch light.

I had a very clear thought, and it was the kind that you do not say aloud until you have to.

"We go now," I said.

"The front door is a keypad, and I don't have the code. The back stair goes through the bakery kitchen, which doesn't open until half past four."

"Then half past four," I said.

"My mother's driver sleeps in the gatehouse. He'll see the truck."

"Then we leave on foot over the pear tree wall."

He almost smiled.

"You've done it before."

"Twice."
