Chapter 16: The Shower
Patrick covered my mother's hand with his own.
"I'm not going anywhere, ma'am," he said.
Her eyes filled, and she nodded once and closed them.
I walked out into the hall and stood against the wall until I could breathe.
On Monday morning I woke in the master bedroom to the sound of the shower.
The blue sheets were warm on his side, and the light came in grey through the curtains.
I lay there a minute thinking about a word my mother had spent.
Then I got up, took off the T-shirt I slept in, and walked into the bathroom.
The room was full of steam.
Patrick stood under the water with his back to me and both hands braced on the tile.
Water ran down the long muscles of his back and the white scars on his shoulders.
He heard the door.
"Edie."
"Don't turn around."
He didn't.
I pulled back the glass door and stepped in behind him, and the hot water hit my skin.
I put my arms around his waist and pressed my breasts to his back.
He let out a long shaky breath.
"Good morning," I said, against his shoulder blade.
