Chapter 13: Hello, Samantha

I put the stack of cards down very carefully, because my hands wanted to do something else.

"Waylon," I said.

"You're here," he said, and it was half a question and half an accusation.

"I work here. For now."

He came two steps into the lodge and the door swung shut behind him.

His eyes went over the desk, the name tag pinned to my fleece, the key rack, the map of the tents.

The name tag said Jo.

"Sam," he said. "What is this?"

"A summer job."

"It's October."

"Then it's an autumn job."

He laughed, a short bright laugh that I had once loved, and his hand went up to his collar.

I watched it settle there.

He touched his collar when he lied, and I had known that for six years and never once said so.

"Okay," he said. "Okay. You're upset about the papers. I get it. I should have taken them seriously. Come home, and we'll sit down at the kitchen table and do this properly."

"How did you find me?"

"Your phone. The family location thing." He held up his own phone. "You've been gone four days, and I was worried."

"You were worried."

"I'm your husband."

Behind him, through the window, I could see a woman in a green jacket crossing the gravel toward the lodge with two paper cups.

It was not Shanna.

It was a guest from Tent 7, and she turned toward the trail, and my heart started again.

Waylon had followed my eyes and turned his head to look.
