Chapter 15: Business Only, Keane

I hung up on Neil, and my hands wouldn't stop.

Brogan drove us back to the workshop without asking where I wanted to go.

He lit the space heater, and I stood in the middle of the concrete floor in my coat, shaking.

"He's going to do it," I said. "He'll file Friday, and the judge will see two hundred rows of me crying."

"The judge will also see four hundred thousand people who watched you hold up the log."

"That doesn't help."

"I know it doesn't." Brogan took off his jacket. "What helps?"

I didn't know how to say it, so I crossed the floor and put my hands flat on his chest.

His heart hit my palm, fast.

He looked down at my hands and then at my face.

"Mara. You're upset."

"I'm awake."

"You're running on adrenaline."

"Is that a problem?"

"It might be, if you're only here because the day was ugly." His voice was low and careful, and it made me furious. "I'd rather not be a place you go to stop shaking."

"You'd rather not."

"Business only, Keane," he said, and he said it gently, so it landed like a slap.

I stared at him.

He had thrown my own rule back in my face, with my own surname on it.

"You're kidding me."

"I'm not saying no." He caught my wrists. "I'm saying I want you to know what you're asking."

"I know exactly what I'm asking."

I pulled one wrist free, took the front of his shirt in my fist, and dragged his mouth down onto mine.

He fought it for about one second.

Then he made a sound and kissed me back, hard enough to push my teeth into my lip.

My coat hit the floor, and his hands went under my sweater, up my bare back.

"This is not adrenaline," I said against his jaw.

"Then what is it?"

"It's you, you stubborn idiot. Take my clothes off."
