Chapter 6: Welfare Check

The officers stood in Lucille's front hall with their hats in their hands, and the church couple stared at me over the pie.

"Who made the call?" Lucille asked.

"The caller asked to stay anonymous, ma'am," the taller officer said.

"I made it," Neil said from the doorway behind them.

He had come back in from the porch with his phone in his hand and a look of pure relief.

"Thank you for coming so quickly," he said. "I'm so sorry, Mom. I didn't know what else to do."

"You called the police on your wife," Lucille said slowly.

"She said she wanted to hurt herself."

"I said I wanted a divorce," I said.

The shorter officer glanced at his partner.

"Ma'am, can we talk somewhere quiet?"

"Here is fine," I said. "I've got nothing to hide, and I'd like everyone to hear it."

They stood me by the sideboard, under the Hearth speaker, and the taller one took out a small notebook.

"I'm going to ask you three simple questions."

"Go ahead."

"Are you thinking about hurting yourself?"

"No."

"Do you know where you are and what day it is?"

"Mrs. Pellam's dining room," I said. "It's Sunday, and I'm one slice of pie short of dessert."

The shorter officer made a sound that could have been a cough.

"Does anyone in this house threaten you or make you afraid for your safety?"

I looked at Neil.

He looked right back at me with his sad, steady eyes.

"My husband just called you here because I got up from a lunch," I said. "That's the whole threat. It's the third time this week he's sent someone after me."
