Chapter 13: Whose Signature
"He did not sign it," Ingrid said again, and this time her voice held.
She sat on the closet floor with the folder open across her knees.
Cavan sat across from her with the radio switched off between them.
"Tell me how you know," he said. "Not how you feel. How you know."
She turned the page toward him and put a finger on the signature.
"That is his right-handed signature, the big loop on the E."
"On March fifteenth he fell on the ice outside the office and broke his right wrist."
"It was in a cast to the elbow until the middle of April."
Cavan went very still.
"He couldn't hold a pen," he said.
"He practiced with his left hand at my kitchen table that week. I laughed at his handwriting."
"It looked like a toddler wrote it, and he laughed too."
She closed her eyes.
"Nobody has ever asked me about the cast. I never thought to say it out loud."
"Who else knew about it?"
"The whole office. He wore a sling to the March meeting. Torsten brought him soup."
The way she said the last word made it sound like poison.
