Chapter 24: Big Shot
On the Monday before Christmas, snow came down outside the second-grade windows in large, slow flakes.
The classroom smelled of pine needles and glue sticks.
Paper snowmen hung from the ceiling, and thirty small chairs had been pulled into a half circle for the families.
Cavan sat on one of them with his knees up around his elbows.
Ingrid sat beside him in a camel coat, her hand on his arm.
Eugene had taken the seat at the back, in a fleece vest and a Santa hat he had been talked into.
Next to him sat Anders, in a plain sweater, as shy as a man at his first parent day.
"We'll begin with Show and Tell," the teacher said. "Who would like to go first?"
A boy in a puffy vest jumped up from the front row.
"Me," he said. "My dad is here."
His father stood and waved from the back, a broad man in a good coat, with the smile of someone used to being introduced.
"My dad sells boats," the boy said. "He has a car with leather seats."
"My dad says nobody can make a living driving a rideshare. He says anybody who drives at night is a loser."
