Chapter 12: I Know
I stood on the brake so hard the sedan slid sideways on the gravel.
Hank Rudd did not move.
He stood in my headlights with his arms folded and his shadow thrown back across the road behind him.
I put the car in park and sat there, breathing.
He walked up to my window and tapped on the glass with one knuckle.
I lowered it three inches.
"Nolan," said Hank.
"Get out of my way."
"There's one road out of that house," he said. "I left before you did, and I know the shortcut."
He nodded back toward the lake.
"I heard the dock. I heard your father say it, and I heard you on the stairs."
"Then you know I'll go to the police."
"I know."
He looked at the road, and then at the black lake.
"I took two payments on you," Hank said. "One cleared, and one bounced. I don't like it when a customer I've been paid by gets his money's worth cut short."
"Her money."
"The wife's money."
He nodded slowly.
"She paid on the first. It's the ninth. Month's not up."
I stared at him.
"That's your whole reason."
"I'm a simple man," said Hank Rudd.
He stepped back and pushed his own car off the road with one big shoulder, until it tilted in the ditch.
"Your father's men are watching the highway," he said. "Take Route 9, past the diner."
"Hank. You're going to testify."
"Ask me when she's out of that cell."
"Why wait?"
"Because I want to hear her say it," Hank said. "Not you, not him. Her."
I had no answer for that.
I drove.
I reached the county jail at the edge of dawn, with the sky turning gray and a single light burning in the lobby.
