Chapter 21: The Table
Viola's POV
"Say it, Tullio," I said. "Say what I threatened. I'd like to hear it too."
He swallowed.
His watch was on his wrist, and for once he did not look at it.
"She said..." he began.
"Louder, boy," said his father.
"She said I was nothing to her."
"That's not a threat," said the old man who had laughed.
"No," Tullio said. "It isn't. I'm the one who said it to myself."
His father's heavy hand closed on his sleeve, and Tullio sat down.
The room was quiet, and I walked to the long board with my father's coat over my arm.
I laid it across the white cloth with the scorched cuff turned up.
Nobody spoke.
"This hung in the study of the house I was born in," I said. "My brother held an umbrella over it at my mother's funeral."
I put my mother's letter beside it and slid it to the old man's place.
He read it slowly, with his lips pressed together, and he laid it down.
"It names a driver," he said.
"It does."
Every head at the table turned toward the first chair.
Tullio's father laughed.
It was a big, easy laugh, and it did not reach his eyes.
"A woman's note, never sent," he said. "A coat, which any tailor in Palermo can burn for fifty euros. Is that your proof, signora? Is that what the Table crossed Sicily for?"
"No," said a voice at the door.
My brother stood there with the tablecloth bundle in both arms.
His suit was creased, his face gray, and his shoes were wet from the grass.
