Chapter 6: The Closet

The closet was narrow, and it was full of Fiora's dresses.

Cesare pulled me in and stood behind me, and drew the door shut to a crack.

I stood in the dark with a silk sleeve across my cheek.

His chest was against my back.

His breath moved the hair at my ear.

He put his hand flat over my mouth, very lightly, and I understood that he meant for me to stay quiet.

I nodded against his palm.

He took it away.

Through the crack I could see a slice of the room and the end of the bed.

"Fi?" Nico said.

The door shut.

He came in, tossing his keys on the counter, and I heard the drawer under the toaster slide open.

"Left my phone," he said. "You've been crying."

"I miss you," Fiora said.

Her voice was thin, but she kept it steady.

"I'm here, aren't I?"

"You're here for five minutes."

He laughed and came across the room.

I saw his back as he sat on the bed.

I saw her hand reach up and touch his collar.

I have never hated anything more than I hated the way he leaned into her palm.

Cesare's fingers closed over my wrist, once, a warning.

I had not known I was gripping the clothes hanger in front of me until the wire bit into my skin.

"The wives' brunch was a disaster," Nico said. "She played the video, Fi. The whole video, on the hotel screen, with the sound. My cousin's wife drove off with his car because of her."

"Who told you?"

"Everyone. My phone's been going off for an hour."

"She's hurt, Nico."

"She's embarrassing me." He said it without heat. "It's fine. Tonight I'll call a Table, an hour's notice, and have the wedding date written in the book before she has time to hold another brunch."
