Chapter 13: Everything

"Every Thursday," I said.

"Yes."

"For two years."

"After the dinner trays went out. Six o'clock, until the evening nurse came back to the floor."

"The plums."

"I brought them. She asked for them."

"She never ate them. I asked her why."

"She said they were for company." His thumb moved across the plum's skin and stopped. "She wanted the nurses to see a visitor with a bowl, not a Montanari with a reason."

I stayed where I was, in the doorway, in my socks.

"You said everything," I said. "In this kitchen, you looked at the window and said everything."

"I did."

"Then say it."

He pushed out the chair beside him. I didn't take it.

"After the restaurant, the whole city said Montanari men had fired," he said. "I had nobody on that street. Two weeks later her nurse brought me a plain envelope. It asked me to come on a Thursday."

"Why would she write to you?"

"Because she didn't believe the story either. She said nobody on my side knew the Gallis would be at that table. Somebody on theirs had told the shooter."

"And?"

"She asked me to find out who in her son-in-law's house was feeding Tommaso lies. She said the lies were getting closer to you."

My mouth was dry.

"I said I would look," he said. "I've been looking for two years."

He took a single page from under the bowl and laid it on the table.

I came and read it standing.

It was a payment record. Forty thousand dollars, labeled as a consulting retainer, from the Neri and Associates client account.
