Elisa's POV

Massimo told me on Thursday night, in the kitchen, before I could ask where he had been.

He told me about the bar in Cicero and the bargain he had made.

I was furious for a full hour.

Then I asked him what my mother would have said.

He said she would have asked the man's name.

"He doesn't give it."

"Then I want to see his face on Sunday," I said.

On Sunday, the long table was full again, and this time Vittoria sat at the foot of it.

She wore her gray suit with a yellow-tabbed folder in front of her. She looked rested.

"Don Galli," she said, as I took my seat. "Thank you for hearing me."

"Speak."

"For two years, Massimo Montanari visited Elisa's mother every Thursday at the rehabilitation center."

She opened the folder.

"I have the sign-in sheets, and photographs of him with his hand on her arm.

"A Montanari, meeting privately with a Galli's mother-in-law, while her son-in-law was drawn into a scandal."

A murmur ran through the room.

"They were planning this," Vittoria said gently. "Elisa's hotel nights. The separation. Dario. A mother and a rival, using a sick woman's trust."

The big capo leaned forward on his elbows.

I felt my face go hot.

"She's right," Massimo said from the wall.

Every head turned.

"I visited Elisa's mother every Thursday," he said. "She wrote to me after the restaurant and asked me to find who in this house was feeding Tommaso lies."

"You admit it," the big capo said.

"Yes. I have the letter."

"A dead woman's letter."

"Her handwriting is on the pendant slip Elisa carried out of this house."
