Chapter 12: Gia Calls

The woman behind the bar turned to look at me.

So did the fishermen at the pool table.

The old man put his beer down very carefully.

On the screen Renato was still smiling while the anchor read my married name out loud for the whole harbor to hear.

Sandro reached over the bar, took the remote out of the woman's hand, and turned it off.

"Hey," somebody said.

"Bruins are on in ten," Sandro said. "Nobody wants to look at that guy."

He handed the remote back.

The woman behind the bar looked at me for a long moment.

Then she poured me a second glass of wine and pushed it across.

"My ex-husband smiled like that," she said. "Drink up, honey."

That was the whole conversation. Nobody in that bar ever brought it up again.

On Saturday morning the yard phone rang.

It was an old black phone on the wall of the shop, with a cord so long it reached the steam box.

Sandro picked it up, listened, and held it out to me without a word.

His face had closed.

"Annalisa?"

It was Gia.

She was crying.

Not the pretty crying from when she was a girl and wanted something. Ugly crying, the kind with no breath in it.

"Gia. Where are you? Are you safe?"

"I'm in the bathroom. In the blue suite. I locked it."

"Is he there?"

"He's downstairs." She hiccuped. "He saw the news and he went into the nursery and he broke the crib. He broke it with his hands, Annalisa. It was still in the box. Then a man came to the house last night with blood on his shirt and they took him into the garage and I heard."

She stopped.

"What did you hear?"

"Nothing. I didn't hear anything."

I leaned against the steam box. It was cold today. Sandro hadn't lit it.

"Gia. Listen to me. You can leave. Today. I can send somebody."

"Leave?" Her voice changed.

It went flat, then hard, like ice skinning over a puddle.
