Chapter 17: Coast Road

Gia snatched the phone back and stared at it.

"He said it was a present."

"It is," the marshal said. "For him."

"He's in Boston. He's three hours away."

"He doesn't have to come himself. He has a nephew in custody and a lot of other nephews." The marshal stood up. "Pack whatever you've got. You're coming to Bangor with me tonight. We have a motel the office uses."

"No." Gia grabbed my sleeve. "Not without her."

"Gia."

"I came to you." Her voice cracked. "I'm not going to some motel with a stranger. Please."

I looked at Sandro.

He was already reaching for his truck keys.

"We'll follow you," he said.

The marshal hesitated a moment.

"Fine. Two cars. You stay right on my bumper."

"What about the phone?" I said. "If we turn it off, he knows we found it."

"I'll smash it."

"Don't." I picked it up. "Give it to someone who's going somewhere else."

The old man was in the doorway, snow on his cap.

He held out his hand.

"I'm hauling traps down the bay this afternoon," he said. "Out past the islands, and back after dark. Let 'em watch that."

He put Gia's pink phone in the chest pocket of his oilskins and went down to his boat.

The plow came through at noon.

We left at three, in the last of the light.

The marshal's gray sedan went first, with Gia in the back seat, her face a pale smudge in the rear window.

Sandro's truck went second.

The dog stayed with the old man's wife.

The coast road was white and narrow and had no guardrail for long stretches.

On our right the bay was black and full of floating ice.

Sandro drove with both hands on the wheel.

"You didn't have to come," I said.

"Yes, I did."

"She's my sister. Not yours."

"She threw up in my father's Buick," he said. "That makes her a little mine."

I laughed.

That was when the headlights came up behind us.

High, wide headlights. A big SUV, black.
