Chapter 9: The Witness

I got in the car.

The marshal put the box on the seat beside me and handed me her own windbreaker.

"Put that on before you go into shock," she said. "You're blue."

She drove fast and boring, two hands on the wheel, eyes in every mirror.

"Is he all right?" I said.

"He's fine. He's furious. He called me a dozen times yesterday." She glanced at me in the mirror. "In ten years he's called me twice. Both times it was his mother's birthday."

I opened the flip phone.

One number.

I pressed it and held the phone to my ear with both hands.

He picked up before it rang.

"Annie?"

"I'm out. I'm in her car."

His voice broke with relief.

"Did he touch you?"

"No. I walked out through the garden room. In front of all of them."

"With what?"

"Something stupid in my hands."

There was a pause.

Then he laughed, the real laugh, the one from Federal Hill, and I had to put my forehead against the cold window.

"Put her on," he said. "I want to yell at her for letting you do it."

"She didn't let me. She was across the street."

"I'm going to yell anyway."

The marshal held her hand back over the seat without looking.

The federal building downtown was empty on a Sunday night except for a guard and one man.

He wore a fleece vest and had reading glasses pushed up on his head.

He was the assistant U.S. attorney.

He'd been called away from his kid's soccer game, and he made sure I knew it.

He took us into a conference room with a long table and a bad painting of the State House.

I set the box down.

He looked at it.

"Mrs. Vescari. Let me save us both some time." He sat down across from me and folded his hands. "You've been the Vescari bookkeeper for nine years. If those are what I think they are, you're not a witness. You're a co-conspirator who's mad at her husband."
