Chapter 12: Six Years of Knowing

Nobody spoke.

Then every Don at the table started shouting at once.

"Every account?"

"Six years she's had our money!"

"Seize her!"

The chair struck the table twice with his open hand. Nobody listened.

Benny stood with his arms spread wide.

"You see, gentlemen? I told you."

I stayed on my feet with my hands flat on the wood and watched the room come apart.

Then a chair scraped, hard, beside me.

Teo stood up.

He was still gray. He did not look at the Dons. He looked at me.

"I know," he said.

It was not loud, but the shouting died.

"I know who she is," Teo said. "I have known since our wedding night."

The room went still.

I heard the watch ticking in the middle of the table.

"What?" I said.

He turned to the chair.

"She set that watch on my nightstand six years ago," he said.

"I recognized the scratch on the case. I had seen it on its chain, hanging from Aldo Bellandi's vest."

"Teo," I said.

"I stood on the corner on Mulberry Street the night he died," he said, to the whole table.

His voice was flat and steady.

"I was the lookout. Benny went through the door. I heard the shots."

Benny's smile froze.

"I took the East Side three months later, as a reward for keeping my mouth shut.

"I took the daughter into my house six years ago, knowing whose she was.
