Chapter 12: A Girl in a Yellow Blanket

I hit him.

I put every ounce of the week into it, and my open hand cracked across his face loud enough to ring off the chandelier.

Rocco's head turned.

He did not lift a hand to his cheek.

"Nine years," I said.

"Cosima."

"I buried babies I never had. I sat in that kitchen while your mother's friends asked what was wrong with me."

"I know."

"You let me think it was me."

"I let you think it," Rocco said, "because I needed you."

The Dons were staring at him.

"A baby with a stranger's blood would never have carried you," he said. "I wanted our child, Cosima. I wanted a Lucarelli heir with your face."

"Then why not ask me?"

"Because you'd have wanted to carry it yourself."

"Of course I would have!"

"And your body wouldn't have survived the pregnancy. The doctor ran the numbers. Your blood type is a danger to any baby you carry, and a danger to you."

I laughed.

It was a terrible sound.

"So you found a girl you could pay," I said. "You put my baby in her stomach, and you let me think I was empty."

"I kept you in my house," he said. "I kept you safe, and I kept you close, because the child would need your blood one day. I didn't lie about that."

"You lied about everything else."

"I lied to protect you."

"You lied to own me."

Behind us, Fabiola made a thin, high sound.

"I carried her," she said. "I carried her for eight months. You promised me the ring."

"Take her out," Rocco said without looking.

Two of his men started toward the wheelchair.

"No," I said.

I did not know I was going to say it.
