Chapter 15: Agnese's Kitchen

Agnese was making gnocchi at seven in the morning, with flour to her elbows and her crucifix swinging over the board.

I had stood in that kitchen for five years, being told how I held a knife.

Today she did not look up.

Teo's car sat at the curb with the engine running, because I had told him I would not take him inside.

"Close the door," Agnese said. "Sit."

I stayed where I was.

"I'm not here to be fed."

"I'm not feeding you. I'm telling you."

She wiped her hands on the dish towel and finally turned around.

Her face was gray, and her bun had come half loose.

"I toasted that child," she said. "I stood up in front of my own family and I raised my glass to Delfina's belly. I thought my son had done a sin with a woman who wasn't his wife. I was ashamed, and I was glad. Do you understand that? Both."

"Yes."

"I said it for my own table, so that when the child was born nobody could tell me he wasn't ours."

"You humiliated me in front of twelve people."

"I know what I did," she said flatly.

"Then why am I here?"

"Because he came to me last night. He sat on that stool, with his tie off, and he told me what Delfina is holding over him."

I went cold.

"He said it calmly, with his tie off," Agnese said. "He said,'Ma, it was one car. It had to be done for the peace.' He wanted me to tell him it was right."
