Chapter 24: The Name
The baby came on a Tuesday in October, at four in the morning, after eleven hours and one very rude word.
The word was Lena's.
Damian had been holding her left hand the whole night, and he came out of the delivery room with five bruised fingers and a grin he could not take off his face.
"Say it again," she croaked from the bed. "The thing the doctor said."
"It's a girl."
"Hi," Lena whispered to the red, furious bundle on her chest. "Hi. I said she."
Damian laughed until he had to sit down.
The baby had a full head of black hair and a scowl that belonged to a man in a three-piece suit.
Lena looked at it and laughed too, with tears running into her ears.
"She's got his eyebrows."
"God help us."
"She has your mouth," Damian said.
"She has her own mouth."
He touched the tiny fist, and it closed around his finger with an astonishing grip.
He did not say anything for a long time.
Her mother came first.
She stood in the doorway with her hand pressed to her chest, and then she crossed the room in three steps and put her face against Lena's hair.
"Oh, sweetheart."
"Mom, meet your granddaughter."
"Hello, you," her mother whispered. "Hello, little one."
Her father waited at the door.
He had been told to wait, and he had done it with the patience of a man who knew he had to.
Lena looked at him for a moment.
Then she nodded.
He came across the floor on careful feet and stood beside the bed, and his hands shook as Damian laid the bundle in his arms.
