Chapter 21: The Night Before
Brennan's POV
I made two phone calls on Friday afternoon, from the end of the pier, with the engines of the four-thirty boat ticking behind me as they cooled.
I made them without telling her, and I meant to tell her before the night was out.
The first was to Darby Mercer.
She answered on the first ring, from the yard's back office, in a whisper.
"Brennan?"
"Can you talk?"
"My dad's in the shop. I've got two minutes," Darby said.
"Tomorrow at four," I said. "There's a screen by the arch for the slideshow."
"Shea's slideshow. Forty photos of her and Todd at a lake."
"Who runs the laptop?"
There was a short silence.
"Me," Darby said slowly. "Mom told me to. I'm the one who knows the program."
"I'm going to ask you to do something, and you can say no. I'll still think well of you."
"Don't say that. I've been waiting since Easter."
"I want you at the arch with the laptop. I want what's in that folder on the screen when Kirsten gets to the front," I said.
I heard her breathe.
"Brennan, that's my brother."
"I know."
"He's going to look at me," she said.
"He is."
"I'm going to be sick," Darby said, and then, in a smaller, steadier voice, "I'll bring the charger."
The second call was to the caterer.
He was a heavy, tired man who ran a truck out of Orleans.
On the fifteenth of August he had set up a tent, a six-tier cake and a bar for a hundred and forty people.
He had been paid in full, by Kirsten, and had stood under a white tent and watched a bride walk off a bluff.
