Chapter 9: The Guest Kitchen
At one in the morning I found him in the kitchen.
I had gone to the window of the bedroom and looked down.
There was a light on in the guest kitchen below the terrace.
Brennan stood at the big wooden table in nothing but sweatpants.
He was cutting a loaf of the island's sweet bread with a borrowed knife.
He heard me on the stairs and did not turn around.
"I can't sleep either," he said.
"I wasn't trying to."
I came down in his gray shirt, which hung to my thighs.
I had been angry for most of the day.
Somewhere in the evening, between the tea terraces and a plate of fish, the anger had stopped having him in it.
It had moved onto Todd, where it belonged, and it was a good clean heat.
"I'm not mad at you anymore," I said.
"I'd understand if you were."
"I'm mad at the man who sat on a bench and said he was sorry for you, and then said nothing to me for five months." I leaned on the doorframe. "I'm mad at him in a very specific way."
Brennan put the knife down.
"How specific?"
"I want to climb on a kitchen counter," I said. "I want you on your knees. And I don't want to talk about Todd Mercer for the rest of the night."
He turned.
His eyes went down the shirt and back up, and he was already breathing differently.
"Come here."
"You come here."
He crossed the stone floor and put his hands on my waist.
He lifted me up onto the long butcher-block counter beside the sink.
The wood was cool under my bare thighs.
He slid the shirt up to my hips and stood between my knees, and his big hands spread over my legs.
"Plain words," he said.
"Take your time. Slow. I want to feel every second."
"Where?" he said.
"Everywhere. Start at my knee."
