Chapter 21: In Bloom
Blackmere was in bloom when they came up the mountain road.
The orchards that had stood dead and white with frost for two years were thick with blossom from the Hall wall to the cliff.
Pink petals lay on the road, and the air smelled of apples.
Sorcha pulled her horse up and stared.
"I did that?" she said.
"You did that," Brogan said beside her.
"It was only a few buds when I left."
"It was a few buds when you left angry. It is this now."
She reached over and took his bare hand, and he laced his fingers through hers and held on.
The pack was waiting at the gate.
There were hundreds of them, all along the wall and up the steps, and nobody called out.
The gray-bearded elder who had once challenged her stepped forward from the front.
He was carrying a folded cloak of black wool, with silver thread at the hem.
"Luna," he said, and bowed from the waist. "We made this in your absence. We did not know if you would be back to wear it."
"Why make it?"
"Because the first buds opened the day you left, and we knew you were not gone." He cleared his throat. "And because I was wrong about you. I would like it said in front of everyone."
Sorcha took the cloak.
It was heavy and warm, and when she settled it on her shoulders, the whole pack let out a long, low breath.
Her mother wiped her eyes with the back of her glove. Her father coughed twice and looked away.
Brogan leaned in close to her ear.
"Do not cry," he said. "They will take it for weakness."
"I'm not crying."
