Chapter 5: Blackmere

Blackmere Hall stood on the side of a mountain, and it was built of black stone.

It was nearly dawn when the doors opened, and the great room inside was full of wolves who had been told to wait up.

Sorcha walked in between her parents with Brogan a step ahead.

Two hundred faces turned toward her.

None of them were friendly.

"This is our Luna," Brogan said.

A thin gray-bearded elder stepped out of the front row and bowed to him. He did not bow to her.

"Alpha. Welcome home." His eyes went to the crescent on her collarbone. "We hear you have brought back a severed wolf."

"I have brought back my Luna."

"A thrown-away wolf, who could not hold one Alpha's bond for a month." The elder's voice rose so the whole hall could hear. "Our pack has starved for two winters. We need strength at your side, not a southern castoff."

A growl of agreement rolled through the room.

Sorcha felt her father tense.

She laid a hand on his arm, and she stepped forward before Brogan could.

"Your Alpha chose me," she said. "If you think he is wrong, say so to my face."

"Gladly, girl. You are no Luna."

He took one step toward her, with his lip curling back from his teeth.

She did not decide to answer him.

Her wolf did it.

Silver light went across her eyes, and the room dropped ten degrees. The torches on the pillars bent flat.

The elder's knees buckled.

He went down on the stone with a crack, and two warriors beside him went down with him.

Sorcha had not moved.

Nobody in the hall said a word.
